How to purify/filter tap water.?

Any idea how to purify/filter tap water for drinking purpose..,cause nowadays we are facing shortage of drinking water.., and when we checked the supply we have found some dust in it.,and have to collect it in cans or bottles…it makes unable to connect the modern type filter (available in the market) to the pipe lines.,thats why I post this….for your suggestions.,

"Would you mind helping me to make a home made but reliable water purifying system.,and should be economical as well?.."…
